New School Year - 2016

Hello Parents,

Yellow Caterpillar’s Mrs. Singh here, welcoming you to a new school year!

We are already a month in and are continuing to settle into the daily routines of school life: classroom rules, tidying up, safety, and getting a sense of our new surroundings.

This is a crucial time for our little ones, where they start to develop social skills and cues—listening, respecting other’s spaces, taking turns, making friends, and feeling good about themselves in the progress they’ve made. Our play-based program is one that builds on these skills and values. Over this school year we will lay the foundation for learning and fostering independence.

As the seasons are starting to change, we are encouraging our students to pick up on visual cues that recognize transformation—how the leaves turn color, the air gets colder—to build an understanding of how these changes will affect them, that learning to adapt is part of the fundamentals of education. That is, our content of teaching material aims to embody our students’ experience of everyday life.

In science we are experimenting with different types of materials: what floats, what sinks, etc. In math we are developing our number sense through various games and activities: color sorting, category classification, and shapes. In art we have been learning about thanksgiving and fall by creating paper plate/bag turkeys! As Halloween is fast approaching, I can already hear the buzz amongst the students on costumes and candy. Don’t be surprised if you start to hear one of our many Halloween songs and poems! We are very excited about our upcoming field

trip to the pumpkin patch as well. In language, students are developing their oral skills in both English and French through songs, daily prayer, and classroom activities. We had fun learning about zoo animals by creating a classroom zoo, allowing students to enact the zookeeper’s jobs and animals through performance and language. We are now moving on to creating a bakery, I am looking forward to what creative results the students will produce this time around!

As we recently had the students write what they are thankful for this thanksgiving, I wanted to extend my thanks to all you parents for the support and encouragement you continue to give us.

Looking forward to an exciting year ahead! Happy fall everyone!
